Editorial Reviews:

A splendid Seattle-scene overview featuring the likes of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney--everyone of note, in fact, save Nirvana Bonus: two songs from Minnesotan Paul Westerberg, his first since folding the Replacements. --Jeff Bateman

Summary: I love this soundtrack
Comment: I am starting to make the transition between Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. and more unknown early 90's music so this CD seemed like a good buy. I couldn't be happier. Not only are there songs on here by Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam that I never heard before, but I got to listen to other bands such as the Screaming Trees. All in all, this is a great CD for someone who is looking to branch out from the mainstream grunge music of the early 90's but is a little unsure of what to try next.

Summary: Even Better Than the Movie...
Comment: Although Singles was great as a film. It possesses one of the few soundtracks that you immediately notice independent of the action onscreen. I bought the CD way back in 1992 and still listen to it today. The songs "Would" brought Alice in Chains to my attention, and, even though I was always a Replacements fan, it was not until I heard "Dyslexic Heart" and "Waiting for Somebody" that I realized just how strong Paul Westerberg is on his own. The Hendrix track, "May This Be Love," is a standout as is Pearl Jam's "State of Love and Trust." "Nearly Lost You" is a song that introduced me to the Screaming Trees who I had never listened to before buying this compilation. These are the types of powerful tunes that can be enjoyed at the gym or on the road.

Summary: A good overview of the burgeoning 90's Grunge scene.
Comment: I'd certainly recommend this album for those seeking what the review title indicates. Indeed, some of the songs included on this album are amongst the best the featured bands have recorded (especially 'Birth Ritual' by Soundgarden. That song absolutely kills!). Chris Cornell's solo track 'Seasons' is a gorgeous little acoustic number as well. And damn, the guy could sing! His stuff with Audioslave is no indication of just how-damn-fine a singer he was in his day. None better in my opinion. On the low side, however, who-the-hell put Paul Westerberg's 'Dyslexic Heart' on there? Power-pop rubbish. 'Waiting for Somebody' is better, but not by much. But over-all the album is enjoyable listening and worthy of your purchase, especially if it encourages you to check out some of the band's albums (especially 'Badmotorfinger' by Soundgarden and 'Dirt' by Alice In Chains).

Also, just one little issue, I'm sure the original release/pressing of this album featured a Led Zeppelin track performed by Heart, but subsequent releases featured another Led Zeppelin song, 'The Battle of Evermore' (from 'Zo-So') by the Lovemongers. Either the song was changed or, it's the same song but the performance credit was changed (The Lovemongers featured Anne Wilson from Heart on vocals, after all. Maybe for this reason they were credited as Heart because the label figured no-one had heard of the Lovemongers?).

Anyway, I've said enough. Buy and Enjoy. MK.
